Trivia / This Is America, Charlie Brown

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: This series was the brainchild of producer Lee Mendelson, rather than Charles M. Schulz. In an interview, Bill MelĂ©ndez stated that Schulz was indifferent towards it, and his involvement was basically "nil." Melendez himself also wasn't fond of the show due to how difficult it was to produce and artistic mandates he disagreed with. In addition to having to lift gags from the strip, he also had to design the historical figures in a realistic fashion, which he thought clashed with the visual style of Peanuts.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: While many a Peanuts production has featured a boy voicing Peppermint Patty, this is the first time in which Charlie Brown was voiced by a girl.
  • Edited for Syndication: To fill in the hour-long timeslot with A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, ABC paired it with a butchered version of "The Mayflower Voyagers" from 2008-2019.
  • Reality Subtext: In "The Smithsonian and the Presidency," the gang talks about how The Great Depression would have been a scary time in which to grow up. Charles Schulz was himself born in 1922, and thus would have been about the age of the Peanuts kids when the stock market crashed.
  • Working Title: The working title for the episode "The Birth of the Constitution" was "It's Freedom, Charlie Brown."
