Trivia / The Yeomen of the Guard

Go To

  • Creator's Favorite: Sullivan liked Yeoman the best of his collaborations with Gilbert for its more serious and realistic plot.
  • Cut Song: "When Jealous Torments Rack My Soul" for Wilfred, "A Laughing Boy But Yesterday" for Sgt. Meryll. Modern productions may include either or both songs. As well, both Act Finales have extra lines that can be reinserted in several places.
  • Setting Update: The 2022 English National Opera production notably moved the setting from the 16th century to the 1950s (c.1955), with a bunch of characters wearing the royal cypher of Elizabeth II, who in fact died shortly before the premiere. Fairfax's 'crime' was changed to espionage.
    • The setting also added references to Brexit in "A Private Buffoon" and because a patter song is expected, "My Eyes Are Fully Open" from Ruddigore.
