Trivia / The Year of Living Dangerously

Go To

  • Banned in China: In Indonesia, this film is one of several American films banned during the New Order era. The ban was lifted in 1999, a year after president/dictator Soeharto resigned from presidency, signalling the fall of the New Order.
  • California Doubling: The film was actually mostly shot in the Philippines, as shooting in the real Indonesia ran the risk of offending the Suharto regime, then still in power. This would be oddly mirrored later on by Spiritual Successor A Dangerous Life, which was itself set in the Philippines, but this time mostly shot in Sri Lanka, for the similar reasons that remnants of the Marcos regime would rankle at their own portrayal in the latter film.
  • Darkhorse Casting: Linda Hunt predominantly had theatre experience, but little film experience when she was cast.
  • Fake Brit: Sigourney Weaver as British embassy worker Jill Bryant.
  • Fake Nationality: Sino-Australian photographer Billy Kwan was played by American Linda Hunt. The Indonesian characters were played by Filipinos.
  • What Could Have Been: Bob Balaban, Joel Grey and Wallace Shawn were considered for Billy Kwan.
  • Working Title: Living Dangerously.
