• Irony as She Is Cast: Charles Duchemin hates laughing and hates making people laugh. His actor Louis de Funès loved making people laugh.
• Life Imitates Art: In the film Philippe Bouvard is the host of Tous les coups sont permis, a TV show that puts two people who do not like each other face to face. Later, Bouvard will create a similar show in real life, L'Huile sur le feu.
• Reality Subtext: After finding out his son's secret clown career, Charles Duchemin tries to get furious, but because of his recent food poisoning, he cannot find the strength and complains that he "can't get mad anymore". The movie was filmed following the first heart attack of Louis de Funès, after which he had to tone down his trademark Nervous Wreck persona.
• What Could Have Been: Pierre Richard was the first choice to play Charles Duchemin's son before the role went to Coluche.
