Trivia / The Toolbox Murders

Go To

  • Banned in China: In the UK, this was one of the 'Video Nasties' and was banned for several years.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Brazil and Portugal: On the Path of Crime
    • France: The Bloody Drill
    • Germany: The Killer with the Drill
    • Greece: The Killer with the Electric Drill
    • Italy: The Los Angeles Ripper
    • Mexico: Deadly Tools
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Cameron Mitchell "despised" the film, according to the Out in the Dark book.
    • Pamelyn Ferdin, who had been a child star beforehand, never wanted to be an actress and was pushed into it by her Stage Mom. After completing this film, she told her mother she was done with acting. She never even saw it until she recorded DVD commentary for it in 2002.
  • Dawson Casting:
    • Laurie is fifteen, and Pamelyn Ferdin had just turned eighteen.
    • Kent mentions "school" and is implied to be a classmate of Joey's. Wesley Eure was twenty-seven.
  • Divorced Installment: The follow-up TBK: The Toolbox Murders 2 morphed into one titled Coffin Baby.
  • Follow the Leader: Producer Tony DiDio actually admitted the film was only made due to the success of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
  • Playing Against Type: Wesley Eure had just come off Land of the Lost (1974) and had been typecast as Nice Guys for years. He took the role of Kent precisely to go against type as a rapist and murderer.
  • Saved from Development Hell: The sequel, which was in it for several years.
  • Star-Derailing Role: A deliberate example. Pamelyn Ferdin, who had been pushed into acting by her mother, had been growing disillusioned with it for years, and took the role specifically to torpedo her "good girl" image as a child star and ensure that she wouldn't have to act again. It worked, and she only had a few small parts afterwards, soon becoming a nurse and later an animal rights activist.
  • Throw It In!: Wesley Eure suggested adding in the bit where Kent runs the Kathy doll under the tap in the sink right before he kills Vance.
  • What Could Have Been: Two other actresses dropped out of the role of Dee Ann due to the nudity and sexual nature of the scenes. Nude model and Penthouse Pet Marianne Walter, best known under her stage name Kelly Nichols, played it in one of her only two mainstream roles.
