• Actor-Shared Background: Rod Steiger was in the US Navy. While he never made captain, he did get stuck in a torpedo tube once.
• Cross-Dressing Voices: Barney Gumble's mother looks so much like Barney in drag, to the point where Dan Castellaneta (Barney's voice actor) even provides her voice and belch!
• Keep It Foreign: The Latin American Spanish dub switches around the instances where Homer says "It's my first day" in English in Spanish.
• The Shelf of Movie Languishment: This episode was written in 1995 and produced in 1996 for Season 7^note albeit as part of the short-lived 3GXX production line; only three other episodes were produced in that line. For unknown reasons, it didn't air until 1998, in season 9's run.
• What Could Have Been: In the original draft, Bart snuck on board the submarine with Homer. The writers were trying to do it "for the comedy of it", but could not get the draft to work, so it was cut.
