- Accidentally-Correct Writing: Marge goes on Jeopardy! to pay back Springfield, but she ends up with a score of -$5,200, which is so terrible that Alex Trebek actually asks Marge to pay the show back. In April 1985, one player ended up with a score of -$5,100, only $100 more than Marge's score, which was further topped in January 2008 with a score of -$6,200, then July 2012 with a score of -$6,400, March 2015 with a score of -$6,800, and July 2021 with a score of -$7,400. Although, in November 2001, the show had doubled the scoring system, so in either scoring system, Marge would have still been the biggest loser.
- Inspiration for the Work: Writer Ron Hauge said he got the idea for the episode one day when he was heading to work. He was listening to the radio and heard of an orphanage getting ripped off, and they were getting back more than they gave.
- Recycled Script: This isn't the first time Bart ruined a holiday by accidentally burning something.
