- Reality Subtext: The episode's Chalkboard Gag had Bart writing, "South Park — we'd stand beside you if we weren't so scared." The South Park episode "201" was heavily censored because Trey Parker and Matt Stone were receiving death threats from a Muslim extremist group, which led many to accuse Comedy Central of being cowards. Some stations – including the one on Disney Plus – use "Je ne suis pas Français" (trans. "I am not French") instead.
- Write What You Know: The story was based on an event from Matt Groening's childhood. A dead whale washed up on shore in Groening's home town and its carcass had to be blown up with dynamite, the same way the whale in the episode was.
