• Inspiration for the Work: Sanderson has explained that the idea for The Reckoners came to him when he got cut off in traffic while running late for a book event, fantasized about being able to destroy the offending car with his mind, and then reflected on what would happen to society if people actually had supernatural powers and used them in such vindictive ways. This is referenced early in Steelheart, when David describes how an illusionist Epic who was cut off in traffic used her powers to trick the other driver into driving off of the road and crashing.
