- Billing Displacement: Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, and Sam Neill all have proper billing on the poster, but Anna Paquin's name is omitted. Then again, it was her film debut and she was unknown when The Piano arrived in cinemas.
- The Cast Showoff: Holly Hunter had to learn how to play the piano to prepare for her role as Ada, therefore she played most of the piano sequences herself.
- Dark Horse Victory: Paquin was a shocking winner for the Supporting Actress race as most thought her young age would make her an unlikely pick. Hunter, nominated in the same category for The Firm let out a loud cheer when Paquin's name was announced.
- Star-Making Role: For Anna Paquin, who as mentioned on the main page, won the 1993 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance (at only 11 years old).
- What Could Have Been:
- Jane Campion revealed almost 20 years after the premiere she had originally intended for Ada to drown in the sea after going overboard with her piano at the end of the movie. But she didn't have the nerve to kill her off.
- Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Anjelica Huston, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Madeline Stowe and Sigourney Weaver were considered for Ada.
