Trivia / The Others (2001)

• Actor-Inspired Element: Eric Sykes's casting as Mr. Tuttle, the gardener, was Nicole Kidman's idea. She was a fan of his stage work.
• Advertised Extra: Christopher Eccleston has about ten minutes of screentime and is third billed.
• Billing Displacement: The two children are billed after Christopher Eccleston, despite being more prominent in the film than him.
• California Doubling: The film is set in Jersey, but the exterior shots of the mansion were filmed in Spain. The scene where Grace meets Charles in the fog was filmed in Kent.
• Creator Breakdown: Nicole Kidman quit briefly during rehearsals because playing Grace gave her nightmares.
• Enforced Method Acting: Alejandro Amenabar played scary music on set to get genuine reactions out of the child actors.
• Fake Brit: Australian Nicole Kidman playing the English Grace Stuart.
• Reality Subtext: Grace having to deal with her husband leaving her rather eerily parallels her divorce from Tom Cruise at the time. Even more ironically, Cruise was a producer on the film and recommended her for the part.
• Sleeper Hit: A Spanish produced film with no major stars besides Nicole Kidman ended up grossing over $200 million and eventually climbing to the number one spot at the Box Office. It's one of the highest grossing horror films of all time.
• What Could Have Been: Nicole Kidman initially didn't want to do the film. As she had just done the bright and elaborate Moulin Rouge!, she was reluctant to do a film that explored such dark places.
• Write What You Know: Alejandro Amenabar based a lot of the script on his Catholic school education (he later converted to agnostic).
