  • Science Marches On:
    • It's a major plot point that marriage is only still necessary because, although artificial incubation of fetuses is the norm, humanity still must rely on "natural" fertilization. In vitro fertilization, which the Solarians apparently haven't discovered, would be achieved in the real world only 20 years after the novel, but we have still not developed the artificial wombs featured in the novel.
    • It is also mentioned that there is no way to analyze a person's genes directly, so they resort to analyzing the biochemistry.
  • Technology Marches On: Baley has trouble understanding how Quemot and Delmarre could play chess regularly without meeting in person. Today, if anything will look unusual about it, it's the need for two physical chessboards, though that can easily be a matter of personal preference.
