Trivia / The Macdermots of Ballycloran

• Inspiration for the Work: Anthony Trollope had the idea for the novel while living in Drumsna. He discovered an old ruined house while out walking, began to wonder what had happened to the people who lived there, and eventually the ruined house became fictionalised as Ballycloran.
• Missing Episode: Three chapters were cut from the 1860 edition. They remain absent from all subsequent editions, though the 1989 edition includes them in the appendix. Probably they were cut for pacing — two are about Father John's trip to Dublin and his stay with his brother, while the third is a "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue.
• Write Who You Know: Larry Macdermot, an incompetent businessman who spends most of his life in debt, has echoes of Trollope's father Thomas Trollope.
