Trivia / The Longing

• Inspiration for the Work: The Longing was inspired by lead developer Anselm Pyta's trip to the Kyffhäuserdenkmal (Kyffhäuser Monument) in Thuringia, Germany in 2012. There is a legend in Thuringia that says Emperor Frederick Barbarossa is in fact still alive and is simply dormant in a chamber below the Kyffhäuser hills. The Monument itself, erected 1890–1896, contains a statue of the seated, sleeping Barbarossa. The nearby Barbarossahöhle (or Barbarossa Cave) is also a popular tourist attraction, and is primarily composed of anhydrite and gypsum, substances that seem to have helped inform the look of the caves and crystals in-game.
