• The Cast Showoff: The bit with the slingshot was written in after it was discovered that Shirley Temple was good with a slingshot. A few years after this film was made, she actually turned her slingshot on Eleanor Roosevelt! (some editorials and columnists in the William Randolph Hearst owned American press joked that no one should say that Roosevelt did not deserve it).
• What Could Have Been: In an early version of the script, Virgie gives Lincoln the inspiration he needs to write the Gettysburg Address. A script doctor made them get rid of that, saying "if you ever even suggest that Shirley Temple was the inspiration for the Gettysburg Address, they'll throw rocks at us".
