  • Disowned Adaptation: Astrid Lindgren was not pleased with how this film turned out. Later, when she had a meeting with Lasse Hallström, who was about to direct an adaptation of The Six Bullerby Children, she told him that "I'll try not to like you. Because all the directors I like just die." (referencing her long-time collaborator Olle Hellbom, and Ronia director Tage Danielsson, who had both recently passed away). But when she later saw a person who was in the production crew for this film walk past the window, she pointed at him and told Lasse that: "He, however, is not in any mortal danger."
  • Fake Nationality: Englishman Nicholas Pickard portrays Mio/Bosse and Welshman Christian Bale portrays Jum-Jum/Benke.
  • International Coproduction: The film was produced by Nordisk Tonefilm International in Sweden and Gorky Film Studio in Russia. The Swedish Film Institute, Norway Film Development, and Sovinfilm were also involved in the film.
  • What Could Have Been: Director Vladimir Grammatikov originally envisioned that the main cast would be played by Soviet-based actors. However, after numerous failed auditions, Grammatikov decided to travel to London to cast the characters.
