• Cast the Runner-Up: Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern were originally cast in each other's roles until Bob Rafelson decided to switch them.
• Creator's Favorite: This was Scatman Crothers' favorite role of his career.
• Dyeing for Your Art: Ellen Burstyn as Sally cuts off much of her hair onscreen and throws it into a bonfire.
• Playing Against Type: The decision to switch their roles as mentioned above resulted in both Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern doing this, with Nicholson as introverted, nerdy David (complete with Nerd Glasses), and Dern as outgoing, sleazy Jason.
• What Could Have Been: Al Pacino was personally offered the role of David by Bob Rafelson. He turned it down to act in The Godfather.
• Working Title: The Philosopher King.
