• California Doubling: Just about. The movie is both shot and set in California. But the story takes place in Sacramento, and it was shot in various locations in Southern California.
• Dawson Casting: Kevin Zegers plays a high school student while in his early twenties.
• Enforced Method Acting: All the actresses were required to read the books their characters were assigned.
• Fake American: Brits - Emily Blunt as Prudie, Hugh Dancy as Grigg and Lynn Redgrave as Sky. Canadian Kevin Zegers as Trey.
• Reality Subtext: Marc Blucas plays a character obsessed with SA Spurs. In reality he had played college basketball with the star player Tim Duncan. This was a complete coincidence.
• What Could Have Been: Kathy Baker was originally cast as Prudie's mother Sky, but ended up playing Bernadette instead.
