Trivia / The Invisible Man (2020)

Go To

  • California Doubling: The film is set in the Bay Area but was shot entirely in Sydney.
  • Casting Gag: One that was almost certainly unintentional: in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series, "See No Evil", a young Elizabeth Moss plays Kimberly Ventrix, who finds herself stalked by an abusive father with an invisibility suit who she thought she'd never see again. A full twenty-seven years later, and she, as Cecilia, finds herself stalked by an abusive ex-boyfriend with an invisibility suit who she thought she'd never see again.
  • Divorced Installment: The movie was originally going to be an installment in Universal's Dark Universe, with Johnny Depp originally set to play the Invisible Man. The plan fell through when The Mummy became a critical and financial failure.
  • Early-Bird Release: A few weeks after its theatrical release, the film was made available on video on demand, along the likes of Emma. (2020) and The Hunt. The reason for this is the COVID-19 Pandemic shutting down many theaters across the world.
  • Fake American: Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Adrian Griffin) is English, Michael Dorman (Tom) is New Zealander, and Harriet Dyer (Emily) is Australian.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Oliver Jackson-Cohen plays an abuser whose victim is left with PTSD and who is heavily implied to have committed acts of sexual abuse as well. In real life, he is a survivor of sexual abuse from childhood and has spoken about his own struggles with PTSD from his experiences.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: Several scenes in the trailer were evidently filmed just to subvert the audience's expectations in the film proper. For example, a scene of Cecilia staring at a red chair, saying that someone is sitting in it, or the shot of a hand print suddenly appearing on the shower pane while Cecilia is taking a shower. She does take a shower, but the handprint does not appear in the film.
  • Orphaned Reference: When Cecilia finds Adrian's hiding place in the attic, among the items she finds are a set of keys. In a deleted scene, she leaves for her interview and mentions she can't find her keys.
  • Playing Against Type: Oliver Jackson-Cohen who portrayed the troubled, but ultimately good-hearted, Luke Crain in The Haunting of Hill House (2018) portrays Adrian Griffin, an abusive psychopath obsessed with Cecilia. It's worth noting, though, that Jackson-Cohen ended up playing a character much more in line with Adrian in the show's second season later that year although even that character was far more sympathetic and not nearly as vile as Adrian.
  • Playing with Character Type: In Patriot, Michael Dorman (Tom) plays John, a government agent who commits morally questionable acts on the orders of a member of his family (namely, his father). However, John is a sympathetic character, fully in Anti-Villain territory, while Tom lacks any of his redeeming qualities.
  • Saved from Development Hell: The film had been in development since 2007, when it was headed by David S. Goyer. In 2017, Universal reenvisioned it as part of the now-defunct Dark Universe, with Johnny Depp starring and a tentative release date in 2019. After The Mummy bombed, Universal shelved the project and instead redeveloped upcoming Universal Horror remakes as standalone titles. Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse Productions were brought in to rework the project in 2018.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd and Armie Hammer were considered for Adrian Griffin before Oliver Jackson-Cohen was cast.
    • The movie was originally going to be handled by screenwriter David S Goyer. His take centered on Griffin's illegitimate son, who acquired the invisibility formula before getting pressed into service for the British Empire as a spy, and subsequently infiltrates Czarist Russia.
