- Inspiration for the Work: Word of God is that the author was inspired by the following literary works: Frank Herbert's Dune (obviously), Sheri S. Tepper's Grass, Katherine Addison's The Goblin Emperor, Iain Banks's The Hydrogen Sonata, and Scalzi's own Old Man's War series. Apparently, Scalzi's first attempt at writing the novel in a Herbert-esque tone did not go so well, so he went back to his own style.
