Go To

  • Actor Leaves, Character Dies: The character of Valerie Hogan was killed off after Valerie Harper was fired from her own show following a well-publicized off-screen feud with Miller/Boyett.
  • Channel Hop: From NBC to CBS (for its last season).
  • The Danza: For the first two seasons there was Valerie Hogan, played by Valerie Harper. After the character's death, the rest of the series had sister-in-law Sandy Hogan, played by Sandy Duncan.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Jason Bateman directed three episodes - he was the youngest ever person inducted into the Director's Guild at 18 years old.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Like most 80's shows it could easily be found on YouTube, but Warner Bros. has taken down just about every actual trace of the show due to "copyright claim". Antenna TV currently has the broadcast rights as of 2017, airing the show starting with a "sneak peek" as part of the network's Christmas programming before officially adding it to the regular lineup in 2018.
  • Meaningful Release Date: The episode "Burned Out" first aired during Fire Prevention Week, and during its original airing McDonald's (who helped finance the set damage) aired commercials relating to fire safety, and several NBC affiliates ran text crawls relating to local fire preparedness activities during the episode.
  • Post-Release Retitle: The Hogan Family was originally a vehicle for Valerie Harper titled Valerie. After Harper left the show, it became Valerie's Family. When Harper threatened legal action, they changed it again to The Hogan Family.
  • Star-Making Role: For Jason Bateman.
  • Written by Cast Member: Tom Hodges, who plays recurring character Rich, wrote the episode "The Best of Friends, Worst of Times".
