  • Dyeing for Your Art: Dan Stevens had to do a lot of training to get his body in good condition. He was initially worried he'd have to properly bulk up, but upon meeting with soldiers to research the role, he discovered that most of them had slender builds with more toned physiques. This was especially tricky as he had lost thirty pounds for A Walk Among the Tombstones.
  • Fake American: David is played by the British actor Dan Stevens.
  • No Budget: Just made for $5 million.
  • Playing Against Type: Dan Stevens was clearly trying to shake his British period drama typecasting from Downton Abbey. He was cast precisely because the director wanted someone who seemed likable.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In an interview with Jay Bauman of RedLetterMedia, screenwriter Simon Barrett said that the original script was a much darker deconstruction of "sanctimonious, post-Iraq War movies" in which David actually hated and murdered Caleb and visited the Peterson family to kill them as well. This was scrapped however when Barrett found it too depressing and thought to himself "Even I don't want to see this movie."
    • The original script also called for David to be more of an actual cyborg with robotic enhancements.
    • Scenes explaining David's backstory were cut due to negative test audience reactions. Word of God is that they disliked the scenes anyway and were glad for an excuse to cut them.
