- Playing Against Type: Mads Mikkelsen tends to play either sympathetic characters or smooth, even somewhat sexy villains. As a character Svend is really only sympathetic in how pathetic he is. He is otherwise neurotic, unstable, vindictive, and completely and creepily detached from the gravity of the crimes he commits, and there is really not an ounce of smooth- nor sexiness to him. It is also reflected in Svend's appearance, which is a result of the make-up department having been asked to make Mikkelsen, who has been voted Denmark's sexiest man multiple times, look as "asexual" as possible.
