The Film

  • Adored by the Network: During the '90s, TBS showed this movie all the time.
  • Blooper: Once everyone arrives back at the cabin after Chet completes the Ol' 96er challenge only to find that the raccoons got inside the cabin and had strewn garbage everywhere, garbage that includes rotten, maggot-infested meat, Chet runs off-screen to puke and everyone runs after him, the camera pulls back too far and Dan Aykroyd is clearly visible counting down with his fingers to cue the rest of the actors, minus Candy, to run back into frame.
  • California Doubling: Takes place in Wisconsin, was shot near Yosemite National Park in California.
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: The scene that plays over the credits where everyone goes to the bar and dances to Wilson Pickett’s "Land of 1000 Dances" had no instructions in the script- everyone was just encouraged to have a good time.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: The theatrical trailers show footage deleted from the finished film: Chet talking affectionately to a mounted moose head, Roman uttering an unearthly belch at the dinner table, and Roman with his annoying laugh in another scene. In the standard film version, the laugh is only heard when Roman and his clan first arrive at the cabin.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • An early draft of the script showed Chet initially refusing the "Old 96er" challenge. However, it would turn out that no one brought any money to pay for the meal, and the waiters would not let them run back to the cabin to get it, thus forcing Chet to order and actually finish the steak.
    • Another draft of the script also had Roman discovering centuries-old gold coins in the mine shaft while rescuing his daughters and thus ending his financial woes.
    • The scene where Roman's twin daughters got stuck out in the pouring rain was going to have Roman take on a giant killer fish to save them. However, the mechanical fish built for the scene was having problems working before shooting started, and on a lack of time they scrapped it out completely.
    • A reboot of the movie starring Kevin Hart was announced in 2017, but has since been put on hold.
    • Chevy Chase and Bill Murray were some of the original considerations to play Roman.
    • John Candy grew a huge beard for his role, but the studio made him shave it off as they felt it didn't suit his look.
  • Working Title: Big Country.
