  • Development Hell: The book itself was technically finished in 1960. However, as the book belonged to an anthology of three "cautionary tales", The Vinegar Works, Gorey did not publish the book until three years later when he finished all three. His work on The West Wing was the primary reason for this delay.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Originally, Fanny was not supposed to be drawn with the hat that covers her face, and she had her chest covered, unlike in the final book. Her original design can be seen in the 50th anniversary edition of the book.
    • The back cover, which features the tombstones of all the dead children, was supposed to have a tree behind all of them, likely serving as a placeholder for the skull-faced figure on the front cover.
