- Creator Breakdown: The album was recorded during a turbulent period for both Cohen and the world. Not only did he have to take a year off after the supporting tour for I'm Your Man to look after his son, who was in a coma for four months following a car accident, but the Revolutions of 1989 (which Cohen believed would more harm than good) and the Los Angeles riots also left him ruminating on the uneven state of the world. The result is one of the darkest albums in Cohen's discography.
