Trivia / The Exterminating Angel

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Buñuel was dissatisfied with the final film, feeling he was limited by a low budget and Mexico's more conservative sensibilities keeping him from including harsher elements (like cannibalism).
  • Fake Nationality: Leticia is Non-Specifically Foreign (implied to be Northern European given that she's nicknamed "The Valkyrie"), but is played by Mexican actress Silvia Pinal.
  • The Other Darrin: In the final church scene, Lucia is played by Rita Macedo instead of Lucy Gallardo. This is because Macedo was originally cast in the part, but had to drop out suddenly after an unexpected pregnancy. The church scene was the first to be filmed, and was too expensive to restage, so for a single shot Lucia is a different actress.
  • Throw It In!: Many of the scenes were improvised, including the one where a sheep is blindfolded.
  • Recycled Script: Parts of the script were actually recycled from a treatment Buñuel wrote in the 1940s that eventually became The Beast with Five Fingers. Similar elements include a large mansion, piano recital, and the stabbing of a disembodied hand.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • A Working Title was The Castaways of Providence Street.
    • Buñuel himself has said that if he had shot the film later in Paris, it would have been much more extreme, specifically that it would have involved cannibalism.
