Trivia / The Epic of Gilgamesh

Go To

  • Colbert Bump: General knowledge of the myth has become more well-known as several prominent media franchises have made their own adaptations of the titular character.
  • Contractual Immortality: The gods put it to a vote about whether Gilgamesh or Enkidu should die. One guess who they choose...
  • Missing Episode: The story was lost for thousands of years—it wasn't until 1853 that it was rediscovered by Hormuzd Rassam. And even then, It was only after World War I that the Gilgamesh epic reached a wide audience. Parts of the story remain lost, as certain passages jump around and skip over things without reason, and there have been occasions that slightly more complete versions of the story have been discovered, with the most recent part of the story, a fragment of the fifth tablet, having been discovered in 2015 and another in 2018.
  • Science Marches On: The "two-thirds divine and one-third mortal" thing can be a head-scratcher, until you learn that ancient Sumerians believed that if a woman became pregnant after sleeping with multiple partners, all of them helped father the child. Meaning that Gilgamesh's mom (the goddess Ninsun) seduced a god and a mortal in rapid succession.
