• Creator Backlash: Lovecraft did not regard the story highly and viewed it only as practice for a real attempt at novel writing.
• Write Who You Know: Carter's heroic black cat is probably a reminiscence to Nigger-man, the black cat owned by Lovecraft's family since his childhood, whom he loved dearly and whose disappearance left the young Howard heartbroken. The cat was also featured in another of his tales, The Rats in the Walls, where he was even referred by its real name (although it was changed to the less racist Black Tom when the story was reprinted).
