Trivia / The Dogs of War

  • Deleted Role: Helen Shaver filmed scenes as Drew's lover, but they were cut from the final film.
  • Life Imitates Art: Mercenary Simon Mann (ex-SAS like Derek) used this film as a blueprint in a failed attempt to seize power in the small African country of Equatorial Guinea.
  • The Red Stapler: The film used a cool-looking, but pretty obscure (and never selling well) Manville 25mm Projectile Launcher as one of its props for a fictional support weapon. Not only did awareness about the weapon and its sales skyrocket overnight, but it significantly contributed to renewed interest in such weapons in the militarynote  and directly leading to the creation of the Milkor MGL - the Grenade Launcher (it's used both by this and The Other Wiki as an example of what a grenade launcher even is).
  • Uncredited Role: Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) made an uncredited pass at the screenplay.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Norman Jewison was the first director attached to direct.
    • Tom Berenger has said in interviews that around half of his role was omitted from the final release print. When an executive producer asked him to go on a promotional trip to Japan, he vociferously refused.
