Trivia / The Dana Carvey Show

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Dana Carvey later admitted it was a mistake to premiere the show with the breastfeeding Bill Clinton sketch as it set the wrong tone for the series.
  • Deleted Scene: Several sketches and a whole episode.
  • Old Shame: Some of the writers have admitted that they should have done more homework regarding ABC's programming, which was considerably more family-friendly. One claimed to have had a My God, What Have I Done? moment when he finally watched their lead in show Home Improvement, realizing too little too late how wrong their show was for this audience.
  • Shoot the Money: The show featured expensive on-location shooting and pricey, elaborate props specially commissioned for one-off appearances simply because the writers knew that the network was willing to foot the bill.
  • Screwed by the Network: Part of the reason the show didn't catch on was because it was slotted after the more family-friendly Home Improvement and audiences weren't expecting the edgier humor. Halfway through its already-short run, ABC was purchased by Disney, making the show even less at home on its parent channel. In the end, so many sponsors pulled support that they couldn't afford to keep the show on, and the finale was replaced with a rerun of Coach.
  • Star-Derailing Role: The series was meant to be Dana Carvey's big follow-up to his massively popular run on Saturday Night Live, and its failure reversed his popularity near-literally overnight. Following a botched open heart surgery (for which he was rewarded a huge settlement), he'd attempt a comeback with The Master of Disguise, which obliterated what was left of his career by that point.
  • Write What You Know: The "Waiters Who Are Nauseated By Food" routine was based on a joke Stephen Colbert would do to amuse the rest of the staff at the restaurant where he used to work as a waiter.
  • What Could Have Been: Among the comedians who auditioned for the show and were rejected were Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan, Lewis Black, and Ana Gasteyer.
