- Fake Nationality: None of the actors playing Spanish roles were Spanish.
- No Stunt Double: Burt Lancaster and Nick Cravat (who plays Ojo, Vallo's mute sidekick) were former circus acrobats and so did all of their own stunts. And it is awesome to watch.
- Referenced by...: The improvised submarine (capsized skiff) in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is an obvious reference to The Crimson Pirate.
- Troubled Production: For such a lighthearted film, the shoot was surprisingly difficult, marred by bad weather, ill cast members and star Burt Lancaster having a falling out with director Robert Siodmak, who had previously directed Lancaster in The Killers (1946) and Criss Cross (1948).
- What Could Have Been: According to Christopher Lee, the original script had a more serious tone, until Siodmak signed on as director.
