- Follow the Leader: The original book was, by Pratchett's admission, The Lord of the Rings IN A CARPET! The rewrite makes it more uniquely Pratchettian.
- Old Shame: The first edition, a Lord of the Rings clone Pratchett wrote when he was 17, was this enough for the older Pratchett to extensively rewrite the book before re-releasing it. As he worded it:Terry Pratchett: I wrote that in the days when I thought fantasy was all battles and kings. Now I'm inclined to think that the real concerns of fantasy ought to be about not having battles and doing without kings.
