Trivia / Teito Monogatari

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: The most common portrayal of Kato (tall, thin, long face, prominent chin) is largely based on the looks of his first live-action actor, Kyusaku Shimada.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: Kyusaku Shimada was also Kato's voice actor in Doomed Megalopolis. It was his first time voice acting, too.
  • Fan Translation: The prologue of the first book was translated in 2013.
  • Fountain of Expies: Yasunori Kato received many, up to and including M. Bison. A more blatant expy can be found in Raidou Kuzunoha.
  • Franchise Killer: The cinematic franchise was dented by the critical and commercial disappointment of Tokyo: The Last War. The franchise sort of bounced back after the sales of the OVA Doomed Megalopolis, but it was destroyed again by the incredible backlash against the Direct to Video spinoff film Teito Monogatari Gaiden (which actually tried to outdo the anime in terms of nastiness).
  • Follow the Leader:
    • It's believed that Baku Yumemakura's incredibly popular Onmyoji series (also made into a film of the same name) was written in response to the success of this novel (the first Onmyoji short story emerged 3 years after Teito Monogatari started being published).
    • Within the franchise itself, the disgusting imagery in Doomed Megalopolis was most likely inspired by the commercial success of hyper violent, perverse "adult" anime like the Hentai Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend. Also, the excessive perverse horror elements in Teito Monogatari Gaiden were most likely inspired by the commercial success of Doomed Megalopolis.
  • No Export for You:
    • Despite both the OVA and first movie getting English releases, the books have not due to their heavy reliance on Japanese historical and cultural references.
    • Tokyo: The Last War and Teito Monogatari Gaiden were also not released in the west.
  • Troubled Production: Numerous accidents plagued the set of the first film.
  • What Could Have Been: The original script for Tokyo: The Last War contained more subplots and was more faithful to the novel, however these were all cut due to budgetary issues.
