- Ability over Appearance: Oona Chaplin is of partial Chilean descent and looks noticeably more olive-skinned than the British characters around her, including her brother, but she landed the part anyway.
- Actor-Inspired Element: In the first episode, one of the dockside dogs (who eats the carrion from the river and are known for being vicious) comes up to James and follows him home. Tom Hardy is well known for his love of dogs.
- Dyeing for Your Art: Tom Hardy has not only had to bulk up to play James Delaney, but goes through four hours of makeup to put on the eye scar and cover his own tattoos and replace them with James's more tribal tattoos.
