Trivia / Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers: The Liveblog

Go To

  • Bonus Episode
    • For Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers, it's Chapter 36, "Eternal Snark", where it has the liveblogger herself blogging the events of the chapter "Voodoo on Zyu". Word of God says that it's not canon to the actual liveblogs.
    • Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers II has a special chapter, "Why Would You Choose Them?". It's to show why, exactly, Sean and the Tokusatsu Spirits chose Dante and Conquest to help defeat RINO and save Akira, along with explaining the backstories of some of the other villains to tie up loose ends. Unlike "Eternal Snark", however, this one is canon.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: In Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers II, the blogger admits that her favorite chapter to write was Chapter 10, which included Tim Langdon defeating War, and War himself revealed to be reboot!Dante, along with flashbacks as to how he became the Horseman.
    • Later on, the blogger notes that her favorite installment to write was Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers III, noting how far she has improved from her work, delivering some good, dramatic moments such as Chapters 8 and 9, and being able to remake a Skyrim mod she likes and incorporating that into the overall story.
  • Development Gag: In Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers 3.5, Dan, controlled by Team Sartorius, attacks the group until he is soundly defeated. This is a small reference to an alternate ending to Power Rangers RPM, where Dillon, the character Dan himself played on the show, would have been a sleeper agent and Venjix's final host.
  • Distanced from Current Events: In Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers' first liveblog, one of the running gags would be Rika referring several unliked tweets Rick Medina made, while Cole was praised in-story for various things. After a certain incident in early 2015, Rika says that because of it, she will not make fun of Rick and Cole.
  • Fandom Nod: One of the reasons why the liveblogger chose Sean to become the Ultimate Red Legendary Ranger was because of a fake interview with the actor on April Fools' Day, with one part mentioning that he auditioned for a "red space alien", thought by fans to be the Rangers' equivalent to Aka Red.
    • Conquest’s backstory is a reference to a Dramatic Reading of the original Super Sentai vs Power Rangers, which lamented how out-of-character Cole was, compared to his more heroic canon counterpart. Here, Conquest is an alternate counterpart to Sean Johnson, the blogger's favorite Power Rangers' actor, and showed exactly what would happen if a normal human held the powers similar to Aka Red. Or it would had RINO not disguised himself as Aka Red and handed Conquest the corrupted Ultimate Red Legendary Ranger powers.
  • Hypothetical Casting: Starting from II, the blogger recasted the previous actors for several characters with new ones, along with making fancasts of several original characters.
    • For Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers II:
      • While not stated in the story itself, Will Aston would have been recasted from Samuell Benta to John Mark Loudermilk.
      • Tim Langdon's hypothetical actor would have been Tim Phillipps.
    • For Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers III:
      • Instead of Jennifer Yen, Neo-Vypra's hypothetical actress would be Lauren Landa. Justified, as she's an embodiment clone of the original Vypra.
      • Instead of Shunta Fuchino, Neo-Kiros' hypothetical actor would be Markiplier. This is also justified since he's an embodiment clone of the original Kiros. Shunta would "appear", however, as the "original" Kiros in the final chapter, representing the Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers version.
      • Instead of Masaharu Sato, Dezumozorlya/Dezzie's hypothetical voice actor would be Christopher Randolph.
    • For Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers 3.5, Dr. Edward Payne and Professor Hannah Harrison's hypothetical actors would be Christopher Randolph and Lauren Landa, respectively.
    • For Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers IV and IV RELOADED:
      • Gerald Rivera/Rivia's hypothetical actor would be Doug Cockle.
      • Serena Watson's hypothetical actress would be Sarah Williams, and the character's name is also based on hers.
      • Eli and Jennifer Fleight's hypothetical actors would be Elias Toufexis and Erin Cahill, respectively. Just like Serena, Eli's first name is based on his hypothetical actor's.
      • Brandon LaChance's hypothetical actor would be Kevin T. Collins, best known for the role of Griffith in the original Berserk dub.
      • Kevin Kleinberg's hypothetical actor would have been Sean Cw Johnson.note
  • Meaningful Release Date: Chapter 3 of Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers II was released on February 12, 2015—aside from it being two days before Valentine's Day, it was also the fifteenth anniversary of Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. The story itself had Conquest defeating Sean the first time and beginning to drain his powers.
    • The final chapter of Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers III was released on Good Friday, March 25, 2016. While Rika doesn't sacrifice herself fully, she does become a goddess and the savior to mankind.
    • As noted by the blogger herself on Twitter, the first chapter of Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers IV was released on March 25, 2017, exactly one year to the date where III's finale was released. In the story proper, IV takes place a year after the events of III.
  • Milestone Celebration: Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers III will mark five years since the blogger first started Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers. Also lampshaded by saying that she's hoping it wouldn't suck like the Power Rangers milestone seasons.
  • Old Shame:
    • Rika has acknowledged of late that the later instalments aren’t as good as the first, due to thin plotting and relying on CinemaSins levels of nitpicking instead of actual criticisms.
    • The entire Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers III story arc became this, due to Rika's intense dislike towards Markipliernote  over a certain event involving PewDiePie in February 2017note . She also says that, barring another hypothetical recast, this is why the character won't appear much in future liveblogs, if at all.
    • The original version of Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers IV became this, with the reason being that the story would have been too dark and too long. It, along with the thin plotting for II, III, and to an extent 3.5, became the reason why the writer rebooted it as IV RELOADED and giving all the previous installments but I the Broad Strokes treatment, keeping certain elements such as Dante's friendship with Hannah canon while throwing out the rest or revising it.
  • Schedule Slip: The first two installments were put on hold for a length of time mainly due to writer's block. The first Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers liveblog didn't update for more than a year in between Chapters 5 and 6. Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers II wasn't too bad about the stalling, but there were still pauses between months, which was also attributed to the blogger's real life events getting in the way for a while. Both liveblogs threw some lampshade hangings over the wait. Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers III, however, averted the trope, as the installments were released on a consistent schedule, with a few of them released early.
  • What Could Have Been
    • The entire liveblog for Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers would have been a straight MST with other characters snarking on it throughout. When Akizuki cleared out some errors, changed scenes, and deleted several chapters and rebooted others, it was scrapped.
    • The entire arc for Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers II originally wasn't going to focus on the Akizuki-written stories; instead, it would have been based around Bright Skies, another Rangers-related fic. It would have been a lot longer since it had nearly 100 chapters. The blogger scrapped the idea due to writer's block.
    • One of the villains would've been named "Pestilence" to keep the theme name of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse going, but the blogger wasn't able to find any sort of power to make it meaningful. Instead, he was renamed "Conquest", based on the traditional name for that Horseman.
    • Some of the other stories the blogger would have covered included Kamen Rider Kiva vs. Danny Phantom, Mortal Kombat vs. Marvel Super Heroes, Kamen Rider Fourze vs. Jimmy Neutron, and A Christmas Tori: The Unofficial Sequel No Doubt!. All four got scrapped and replaced by Power Rangers Sword Dynasty due to the blogger not having much knowledge of the covered series and feared that she would not do them justice.
    • The original plan was to have the subplots of the Rangers attempting to save their worlds first, and then show Sean's subplot to restore his powers. However, due to writer's block around the Jetman subplot, the blogger switched its place with the latter subplot.
    • Conquest's demise would have been even worse than in the final draft. RINO would have entered Conquest's body and break every single part of his body, forcing him to bleed out. After dying from his wounds, he would have been "reborn" with RINO's soul.
    • The original subplot for Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers III would have had the villains grabbing a hold of the Idiot Ball and having the citizens be affected by it. It was later dropped since the storyline would become even more serious later on.
    • In Chapter 8, Kat would have been a temporary part of the Brotherhood of Destruction, but with so many characters already included in the story, she was later cut.
    • One of the ideas would be Rika getting killed off, either that Neo-Kiros kills her in Chapter 6 and she finds a way to restore herself back to life, or she would have made a full heroic sacrifice by executing the Thousand Arrows attack and going to the Cessation of Existence with her rival. After much thoughts, the blogger changed her mind on her fate and took a third option.
    • The blogger also thought about making a full battle with the Legendary Rangers and Sean going through all the Ranger forms, but not only did that not happen for the sheer difficulty of mixing it up, but she also wanted to show the progress of the Brotherhood of Destruction's battle against Dezumozorlya.
    • For Super Sentai vs. Power Rangers 3.5, there would have been a third dance team named "Team Sunshine", and their only contribution would have been exposition for the island and giving vague hints about Team Sartorius. They were eventually cut and replaced with the hula dancers and fire dancers later on in the story arc.
    • There would have been four parts: Chapters 1-5 would have focused with the beginning with Team Sunshine, Chapters 6-10 would have focused on Team Sartorius tormenting the heroes, Chapters 11-15 would have been the escape, and the final five chapters would have focused on the team in Makana. This was later scrapped when the blogger realized that it would have too little character focus and development on the newest characters, Professor Hannah Harrison and Dr. Edward Payne.
    • Dr. Edward Payne originally would have died in either the epilogue of IV or sometime in V had they been written, and IV RELOADED would have killed him off due to using the Dino Gem one last time. However, after the death of Jason David Frank in November 2022, the writer decided against it since it would be in very bad taste.
