Trivia / Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Go To

  • B-Team Sequel:
    • Like its predecessor, the game had little involvement from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo's EAD division. Instead it was produced by Gunpei Yokoi and developed by Nintendo's R&D1 division.
    • The game was developed by a different team within Nintendo R&D1 than the team behind Super Mario Land, with the game being co-directed by Hiroji Kiyotake and Takehiko Hosokawa (who had previously worked on Metroid II: Return of Samus and Dr. Mario) as opposed to Satoru Okada, the director of Super Mario Land. The only returning staff members from Land would be R&D1 head Gunpei Yokoi (once again acting as the game's producer) and programmer Takahiro Harada (who is a programmer on both Land and this game).
  • First Appearance: This game marks the debut of Mario's greedy Evil Counterpart, Wario.
  • Permanent Placeholder: According to an interview with Kyotake, Wario's name was originally intended to be a placeholder name that would've been changed at a later point in development. However, the rest of the staff ended up loving it, so it stuck and became his final name.
  • What Could Have Been: According to a 1992 interview with some of the game's developers, the first draft of the game was originally far more outlandish. However, after concerns from the rest of Nintendo that the first draft was too distant from Mario, the developers dialed it back and made it more like the rest of the series.
