  • Hide Your Pregnancy: Veronica Lake waited until after production had started to tell Sturges that she was six months pregnant. Some shots are framed to show Lake only above the waist, in others she wears robes or baggy hobo clothes, and in others Sturges used a stunt double.
  • Hostility on the Set: The aforementioned disclosure of Lake's pregnancy infuriated Sturges so much that he had to be physically restrained until he managed to calm down. McCrea and Lake also did not get along during filming, and he would subsequently turn down the lead role in I Married a Witch because he didn't want to work with her again (that role would go to Fredric March, who would be ridiculed by Lake for his pomposity). The duo did, however, appear together again in Ramrod in 1947.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Preston Sturges originally wanted Barbara Stanwyck to play The Girl. Lucille Ball, Ida Lupino also considered.
    • Sturges had originally intended to use a clip from a Charlie Chaplin film for the church sequence, but Chaplin wouldn't give permission. In an earlier scene, John does parody the Little Tramp character.
