Trivia / Subspecies

• Billing Displacement: Angus Scrimm only appears in the first five minutes in the first film before being killed off.
• Covers Always Lie: the movie poster has a nubile and scantily clad damsel being carried off by the subspecies, something which does not happen in the film itself and girl pictured is not even one of the actresses featured. Allegedly Full Moon gained the funding for this film and sold the distribution rights at the Cannes Film Festival using it and only THEN wrote the script.
• The Danza: Of a sort. Ash's first name is Jonathan, as revealed in Blood Rise. He may or may not be named after his original actor, Jonathon Morris.
• Hostility on the Set: Per Ted Nicolaou on the Blu Ray extra, Anders Hove was hard to work with on the set of the first movie, throwing temper tantrums and drinking too much (which Ted seems to suggest the reason why Anders was difficult) to which Anders himself admitted he was. However, come the second movie, Ted and Anders actually became friends and Anders was much more well behaved, though he still had his moments. Ted himself said himself said he could be bad too at times.
• The Other Darrin:
  • Michelle is played by Laura Tate in the first film and by Denice Duff in the following movies.
  • Due to filming over 20 years after the release of the fourth movie and Vampire Journals, Ash is played by Marco Filipovic instead of Jonathon Morris.
  • Blood Rise also has new actors for King Vladislas and Radu's mother.
• Sequel Gap: The fifth movie was released in 2023, twenty-five years after the previous entry in the film series.
• What Could Have Been: Becky and Mel were originally going to be in Bloodstorm. However the actors playing them were unable to reprise their roles which lead to Ted Nicolaou deciding to write them out with pretty much a literal Bus Crash in the 4th one.
• You Look Familiar:
  • Mihai Dinvale, a Romanian actor, plays Dimitri in Vampire Journals and Dr. Niculescu in Bloodstorm. Ash interacts with both characters and doesn't mention any similarity.
  • Justified in-universe with Denise Duff playing both Helena and Michelle, as Helena's last words after Radu fatally wounds her in Blood Rise is that she will return to torment him and it's heavily implied that Michelle is Helena's reincarnation.
