Trivia / Street Fighter 6

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • Marisa is the series’ second Italian fighter, following Rose. Her English voice actress, Allegra Clark, is of Italian descent, speaks the language fluently, and also shares her character's bisexuality.
    • Gender nonconforming Battle Hub host, Eternity, is voiced by trans voice actor, Vittorio Wyatt Gray.
  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • The original logo for the game shown in the teaser trailer was met with widespread ridicule due to looking boring and cheap, or worse, possibly ripped off existing assets. This didn't help matters as Capcom had previously been sued for plagiarizing assets in past games. In response, the very next trailer for the game featured a version of the logo that was a much better-looking and more stylized hexagonal-shaped "6" with "VI" on one half of the icon and the prism on the other half combining to form a vague "SF".
    • Kimberly received positive reception for being a female African American fighter, a demographic left very underrepresented in the roster for a long time. Both of the game's directors took note that in wanting to keep Kimberly as authentic as possible, they got feedback from many of Capcom's own African American employees on how her design and personality should come across.
  • The Cast Showoff: Cherami Leigh briefly shows off her singing chops during the Critical Art version of Manon's Pas de Deux.
  • Content Leak:
    • The game's entire existence, as well as the fact that it was being developed as a Multi-Platform game rather than a console exclusive like Street Fighter V, was leaked in November 2020 as part of the Capcom data leaks.
    • Hours after the game's announcement trailer at the State of Play event in June 2022, a leak made its way across the internet, revealing 17 fighters that were not officially revealed or teased at the time, concept art of the aforementioned fighters, and a slew of alternate costumes. Capcom indirectly acknowledged the leaks by giving thanks for "all the positive reactions", effectively confirming their validity. Eventually, Capcom just went ahead and revealed the entire launch roster at Tokyo Game Show 2022, which consisted of all but four of the leaked fighters, which were revealed to be the DLC characters for Year 1.
    • Before their reveals at EVO 2022, Capcom Germany prematurely revealed Kimberly and Juri in a series of tweets a few days earlier than they should have, though they swiftly deleted said tweets, having realised their error.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: A writer at Kotaku wrote an article about the aforementioned roster leak and claimed Kimberly would be the first playable black woman in the franchise. This was mocked by many fans who pointed out that Elena (Kenyan),note  Laura (Black/Japanese Brazilian) and Menat (Egyptian)note  were previously playable. The article was later corrected to say that Kimberly would be the first playable African American woman in the series.
  • Cross-Generation Video Game: Notably, the game was released on only one of the eighth-generation consoles, the PlayStation 4, but on both ninth-generation systems, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Defictionalization: All of the stickers adorning Li-Fen's laptop in World Tour mode come included as part of the game's Mad Gear Box collector's edition.
  • Fake Brit: Just like the previous two entries, the American Caitlin Glass voices the very British Cammy White.
  • Fake Nationality:
    • Manon, a Frenchwoman, is voiced by Cherami Leigh, an American.
    • Peter Beckman returns as the Russian Zangief.
    • The American Wally Wingert voices the Russian JP, though story details indicate JP might be lying about his country of origin. The only thing that can really be inferred is that he has a high chance of being from Europe.
    • Rashid, who hails from the Middle East, has the American Ian Sinclair reprising his role from the previous entry.
    • Ed, who is now (ostensibly) presented to be of German descent after having been billed as being of unknown origins in the previous game, has the American Edward Bosco reprising his role from SFV.
  • Fandom Nod: Per Aleks Le, one of Luke's win quotesnote  is actually derived from a common pop-off attributed to the Fighting Game Community, most notably being attributed to Maximilian Dood, whose videos open with a LET'S GO! courtesy of Little V.
  • Meme Acknowledgment:
    • When asked about the "Hobo Ken" memes by Game Informer, Takayuki Nakayama and Shuhei Matsumoto, the project leads of SF6, thought they were Actually Pretty Funny.
    • After Cammy's stretching Idle Animation went viral, Capcom's TikTok account posted a clip of said animation, while their Twitter account acknowledged her popularity verbally.
    • If her reaction to Aleks Le's attempt of the above is anything to go by, Caitlin Glass herself is well aware of Cammy's stretching pose, too.
    • In response to the "I can fix her" memes surrounding A.K.I., her gameplay trailer's description ends with "You can't fix her, but she can fix you".
  • Meme Role Reprise:
  • No Dub for You: In a rather unexplained regression, and unlike with what happened with Street Fighter V, the game launched without Latin American Spanish or any kind of neutral Spanish translation; only the European dialect was included, except for the translation of Lily's dialogues, since it was translated to polite Mexican Spanish instead, just like was done with both fellow Mexicans T.Hawk and El Fuerte in Street Fighter IV. Capcom would fix this three months later, with Latin American translations being patched into the game.
  • The Other Darrin:
  • Prequel in Another Medium: Much like the Street Fighter comic book series, Capcom and UDON teamed up to provide a five issue mini-series that acts as a prequel to the game, focused on Ken Masters and why he is on the run. Unlike those comics that adapted the events of the games after their release, director Takayuki Nakayama provided UDON with the script and storyline of the events before SF6.
  • Playing Against Type:
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • Aleks Le, Luke's English voice actor, expressed even back when the character was first introduced in SFV that being a part of Street Fighter history has been a long-held dream of his.
    • Tiana Camacho, Lily's English voice actress, is a Street Fighter player herself, having mained Cammy at a competitive level for many years.
    • Similar to Camacho, Faye Mata was a long time fan and competitive player of Street Fighter (having even cosplayed as characters like Ibuki, Chun-Li and Juri back during the Street Fighter IV era) and other fighters long before she was cast as A.K.I.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Marisa, a bisexual Italian woman, is voiced by Allegra Clark, a bisexual Italian-American woman.
    • Eternity, a gender-nonconforming character, is voiced by Vittorio Wyatt Gray, who is trans.
  • Refitted for Sequel:
    • When Ryu's bearded alternate costume was revealed in the previous game, Capcom hinted that it would be relevant to the story mode. That didn't end up happening, but this game does give him a beard for his standard design. Similarly, the initial prototypes of SFV were done with a photorealistic graphical style but ended up being scrapped, whereas SF6 now has those photorealistic graphics thanks to the RE Engine.
    • During development for SFIV, a character named King Cobra was planned for the roster, but was ultimately replaced by Rufus. Cobra's fighting style was stated to be "breakung-fu", a Dance Battler fusion of breakdancing and kung fu. Cobra is nowhere to be seen in SF6, but the concept of his fighting style has been passed on to the newcomer Jamie, who incorporates his breakdancing skills with Drunken Boxing.
    • Over the course of the series, several characters have had different Idle Animations from game to game. In SF6, when the Drive Gauge is fully depleted, characters enter a state called Burnout in which they cannot perform any moves involving the Drive Gauge for a time, they get put into Stun state when they are hit with a Drive Impact in the corner and splatted against the wall, and they also suffer from chip damage via special moves. To serve as a visual cue for when a player is in Burnout state, their character's idle stance will change, and these idle stances are direct references to older games. Chun-Li, for example, takes on her original II and Alpha idle stance.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: Some time after the game's release, as well as a statement confirming he would not be reprising his role as Ken for this game, Reuben Langdon would later confirm that he had been fired from the role by both then-producer Yoshinori Ono and the Street Fighter development team at Capcom as early as 2019, when an interview with him went up that displayed several controversial opinions regarding social media movements.
  • Role Reprise:
  • Sequel Gap:
    • Not counting any of the previous title's updates, SF6 released in 2023, seven years following the initial release of SFV.
    • In regards to being a true sequel that chronologically forwards the game's plot, it has been 24 years since the release of Street Fighter III 3rd Strike.
  • Troubled Production: According to the Capcom data leaks, SF6 was initially supposed to release much sooner than 2023. However, the COVID-19 Pandemic slowed the game's development down significantly, and Yoshinori Ono, who had shepherded the Street Fighter franchise for years, ended up leaving Capcom during the summer of 2020 while in the middle of its development. These factors resulted in the game being internally delayed and an extra fifth season of DLC for SFV being developed, which ended up being where Luke, The Hero of SF6, was introduced.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • According to the Street Fighter V Climax Arts guidebook, the staff was at one point considering just naming the game Street Fighter, to go with it being a Soft Reboot. It was ultimately decided, however, to retain the numbering so to maintain consistency over the series.
    • Leaks from Capcom suggest an early version of the game, while still under Yoshinori Ono's production, was intended to be a team-based fighter — it's unclear whether this would have been Marvel vs. Capcom-style tag teams or more King of Fighters-esque. The core gameplay remains strictly 1-on-1 fighting in the final version, with team battles relegated to a bonus mode.
    • According to the Developer Q&A, the original concept for Jamie was an older gentlemen type/Hong Kong police officer, but decided it'd be more interesting to have a younger drunk boxer that utilizes breakdancing.
    • The leaked concept art of Lily showed her wearing a tabard-like smock dress in grass green, face paint, and a feather in her hair. However, when officially revealed, it's clear her default costume has been updated to be slightly more modern, including a fringed shirt and ditching the face paint and feather, but still in keeping with her culture.
    • When details of the game's roster first leaked, it became apparent that Manon was originally going to be named Mimi, which is still a French name, note  though it's considered more of a pet name or generic cutesy nickname, which doesn't suit her elegant character, resulting in a fairly last minute switch. Nakayama would later confirm the original name was changed during the localization process.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: After a tournament player streamed the game with a nudity mod enabled, Capcom issued a statement condemning any and all Game Mods for their games, calling then "no different from cheats" and capable of causing "reputational damage". They would then go on to takedown videos featuring modded Capcom games, as well as update many of their older games to try and prevent modding.
  • You Sound Familiar:
    • Before succeeding Christopher Bevins as Dhalsim in this game, Keith Silverstein had voiced Gouken back in Street Fighter V, which in turn he also succeeded Douglas Lee in, the latter of whom voiced the character in SFIV.
    • Cherami Leigh had voiced Fevrier, one of the Shadaloo Dolls, back in SFV before going on to voice Manon here.
