Trivia / Strays (2023)

Go To

  • All-Star Cast: The Japanese dub is quite a surprising reunion of many well-known Anime voice actors, considering the low-brow topic of the film, including actors like Showtaro Morikubo (Bug), Kenjiro Tsuda (Hunter), Nobuyuki Hiyama (Rolf), Toshiyuki Morikawa (Doug), Mutsumi Tamura (Cathy), Wataru Takagi (Gus), Akio Ōtsuka (The Birdwatcher), and others, and that excluding the celebrities (see below).
  • Box Office Bomb: Budget: $46 million. Box office: $23,988,885 (domestic), almost $36 million (worldwide).note  Mixed reception from critics and audiences and being released in August on the same weekend as fellow bomb Blue Beetle showed that this film was all bark and no bite in theaters. It debuted in fourth on its opening weekend and dropped out of the top five the following weekend, becoming yet another underperformer during a weak year for theatrical comedies.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor:
    • In the German dub, rappers Freshtorge and Eko Fresh play Reggie and Bug respectively.
    • In the Latin American Spanish dub, comedians Ricardo O' Farrill plays Reggie, Carlos Ballarta plays Bug and Michelle Rodríguez plays Maggie.
    • In the Japanese dub, Youtuber Ryuji Akiyama voiced Reggie, while the fashion model MAGGY voiced... Maggie.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • In Latin America, the movie got the more raunchier name of Hijos de perra, literally "Sons of Bitches".
    • Similarly, in Spain, it got the similarly themed Vida perra (lit. "Bitchy Life" or "Tough Life", depending of the context).
    • In the Nordic countries (minus Finland), Italy, and Germany, the film got renamed as Doggy Style, in English.
    • In Singapore, the film was subtitled Strays: Doggy Style.
    • In Brazil, it was named Ruim pra Cachorro (literally “Bad for Dogs”, meaning “really bad”).
    • In Poland, it was titled Spuszczone ze smyczy, meaning "Off the leash".
    • In Japan, it was named Slum Dogs, a pun on the manga Slam Dunk.
  • Crosscast Role: Reggie is physically played by a female terrier named Sophie.
  • Release Date Change: Was originally slated to open June 9, 2023, against Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but was soon moved to August 18 due to the WGA strike.
  • Similarly Named Works: This film is not to be confused with The Strays, a British horror film that was also released in 2023.
