• Blooper: When Ensign Ro takes off her uniform's overshirt to drape over a Bajoran refugee, her communicator magically teleports to her undershirt without her ever moving it.
• First Appearance: This episode marks the introduction of both Ensign Ro and the Bajoran people and their decades-long conflict with the Cardassians occupying their homeworld, which would become central to the plot of Deep Space Nine.
• What Could Have Been: The original script featured the Romulans as the former occupiers of Bajor, but Rick Berman felt the Romulans had been "overused" and so decided to reuse the Cardassians, who had previously just been Villains of the Week in "The Wounded". This change wound up having major ramifications, especially on Deep Space Nine.
• You Look Familiar: Michelle Forbes previously served as a One-Scene Wonder in the episode "Half a Life" as Timicin's daughter, another Rubber-Forehead Alien.
