Go To

  • Deleted Scene: Several scenes were filmed but later cut from the episode during editing. These scenes came to light in March 2013 when Canadian Star Trek collector Cyril "Patchou" Paciullo (owning several more Next Generation episodes workprints) uploaded the contents of an early workprint VHS tape of the episode to the internet.
    • Picard attempts to calm the nerves of his senior staff before the Cardassians board the Enterprise.
    • Riker discusses Benjamin Maxwell's actions with O'Brien.
    • An extended version of the dinnertime discussion between Miles and Keiko.
    • Maxwell marvels at the Enterprise bridge, and encounters Gul Macet before visiting Picard's ready room.
    • An extended version of Picard's ready room meeting with Maxwell, where Picard infers that Maxwell has no documentation to back up his accusations against the Cardassians.
    • In the last scene in which Picard warns Gul Macet, Picard is seen stating, "Take this message to your leaders, Gul Macet. We know. We'll be watching. And we'll be ready." In the edited version, Picard ends the line with only, "We'll be watching."
  • First Appearance:
    • Of the Cardassians, who become major players throughout TNG and DS9 and whose influence is felt on VOY. It also introduces the Galor-class warship, which becomes the most featured Cardassian ship design.
    • The Nebula-class starship makes its debut as well.
  • Recast as a Regular: Or rather Recast as a Recurring Guest. Mark Alaimo would later play Gul Dukat in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. According to the Expanded Universe, Macet and Dukat are cousins, and they do not get along. One character even speculates that Macet grew his beard just to lessen the family resemblance because he was so tired of being seen as a clone of his more infamous cousin. The novel verse goes on to say that Macet joined Damar's rebellion against the Dominion and led the forces who destroyed the cloning facilities in the Deep Space Nine episode "The Changing Face of Evil."
  • You Look Familiar:
    • Marc Alaimo previously played a Romulan in "The Neutral Zone" and a Antican in "Lonely Among Us."
    • Veteran character actor Marco Rodriguez plays Glinn Telle in this episode and also played the hologram of Captain Rice in "The Arsenal of Freedom," who inquires on the specs of the Starship Lollipop.
