• What Could Have Been:
  • This episode was originally set as the first of a two-parter, that would have led into "Q Who". In that case, this episode's events would have been the work of Q, and the Enterprise would have found itself in the Delta Quadrant after flying into the vortex. Alas, as with many ideas of this period, the writer's strike did in the concept.
  • In a closing scene present in the script but not in the final episode, Riker invites Dr. Pulaski, La Forge, and Worf back to his quarters to make up for his omelette fiasco from the teaser and fixes them Alaska stew, which agrees with La Forge and Dr. Pulaski, but disgusts Worf, who "would have preferred another omelette."
