• Acting for Two: In addition to his usual role as Data, Brent Spiner also provided the voice for the microbrains.
• Beam Me Up, Scotty!: The creatures' description of the Enterprise crew in this episode is actually "Ugly giant bags of mostly water." At one point it also addresses Picard as "Ugly bag of mostly water."
• Creator Backlash: Of the story in general, writer and producer Maurice Hurley said it was "An interesting idea, but the execution fell apart." He felt that in addition to the script, there were issues with casting, sets and the time in which to shoot.
• Recycled Script:
  • This episode is TNG's take on TOS's "The Devil in the Dark".
  • The story also bears similarities to the Space: 1999 episode "All That Glisters", which also featured intelligent water-ingesting rocks that communicated with humanoids.
