• What Could Have Been: Alex Kurtzman was originally going to direct the pilot episode, but dropped out in order to direct The Mummy (2017), with David Semel, who had worked with co-creator Bryan Fuller on Heroes and Hannibal, being brought in to direct instead. Kurtzman would later no-so-subtly hint that he regretted not directing this episode, and instead directed the second season premiere.
