• Development Gag: The USS Defiant's original name was USS Valiant. Executive Meddling fearing viewers would confuse it with the upcoming Star Trek: Voyager forced the name change.
• Recycled Set: The Valiant reuses the same sets as the Defiant due to belonging to the same starship class, only with red trim on the walls, Red Squad Sigil Spam, and battle damage to reflect the fact that the ship has been out in Dominion space for eight months with no serious repairs or overhauls.
• What Could Have Been: Originally, the story would have centered on Major Kira and Jake, but that was scrapped as Kira would have kicked the cadets' asses and assumed command in five minutes.
