• Creator Backlash: Nearly all of the writing staff felt this was the weakest episode of Season 4, and that in retrospect, they should probably have kept the Lwaxana segments as the primary story and Jake's section as a subplot (which was the case in earlier versions of the script).
• Development Hell: The script meeting lasted six days – the longest script meeting in the entire seven year run of the show. Basically this was the best they could do before production started.
• What Could Have Been: The earliest versions of the story focused exclusively on the Lwaxana/Odo plot. The producers soon realised this wasn't enough to carry the story, and so added in a subplot involving Jake and a mysterious alien woman who inspires his writing, and eventually swapped the main and secondary plots around altogether.
• You Look Familiar: Put some Klingon ridges on Jayal, and he looks an awful lot like Kang...
• This will be the last onscreen appearance of Majel Barrett as Lwaxana Troi.
