  • Creative Differences: Robert Foxworth (Admiral Leyton) cost himself a job by accepting this role. He had been previously cast in a similar role as a recurring character on Babylon 5. Unfortunately, his agent double-booked him and Foxworth decided to film this episode instead of his prior commitment. J. Michael Straczynski said he could have tried to force him to stick to his earlier contract, but decided having an unhappy actor wouldn't result in a good performance. So he killed off Foxworth's B5 character offscreen, preventing him from having any future appearances. A blooper references this.
  • Creator's Pest: A minor example, but the writers and producers ultimately didn't like the character of Jaresh-Inyo, feeling that he came across as too weak to be taken seriously as a Federation president and that his actor didn't fit the role.
  • No Budget: Due to the expense of "The Way of the Warrior", this two-parter had a very low budget.
  • What Could Have Been: The original idea was for this episode to be much darker, with the changelings succeeding in causing internal division in the Federation. Vulcan was going to secede after the declaration of martial law and the episode would have ended with a Starfleet ship firing on a Vulcan ship in Earth orbit. There was also going to be a more intimate look at the internal politics of the Federation, specifically how the Federation president could have the authority to order around the local Earth government. But it was decided this would be unnecessarily complicated and the matter was dropped.
  • You Look Familiar:
    • Susan Gibney, playing Commander Benteen, previously played Leah Brahms in TNG's "Booby Trap" and "Galaxy's Child." Given what a famous role this was, and the fact that almost no effort is made to change Gibney's appearance, it can be confusing for some viewers.
    • Dear old dad Joe Sisko looks a lot like Admiral Cartwright from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
    • Robert Foxworth (Leyton) would later return on Star Trek: Enterprise as the Vulcan administrator V'Las, who was very much like Leyton.
