• Executive Meddling: In the first draft script for the episode, the DS9 crew were constantly falling over themselves to help Melora with her everyday life. This was deleted during rewrites, as showrunner Michael Piller felt that 24th century humanity would have grown past such attitudes towards disabled people. However, Melora's personality wasn't altered, meaning that instead of her being justifiably annoyed by the patronizing attitudes of her co-workers, she simply comes across as incredibly rude and confrontational for no clear reason.
• What Could Have Been: It was the original intention to have a wheelchair-bound alien as the science officer on the station, but it was decided that it would be too complicated for filming purposes, so they went with a Trill instead. They kept the idea in mind, though.
